Apical dominance Definition:
Because of chemical communication by plant hormones, the closer an axillary bud is to an active apical bud, the more inhibited it is, a phenomenon called apical dominance.

Apical dominance Notes:
Apical dominance is the phenomenon whereby the main and the thicker central stem of the plant is dominant over other side stems, which means it grows strongly over the side branches. Furthermore on a side branch, the main stem of the branch is further dominant over its own side branchlets. Plant physiology describes apical dominance as the control exerted by the terminal bud (and shoot apex) over the outgrowth of lateral buds.
