Past continuous tense shows the ongoing task of past was happening in a specific moment, or action in a time before now. Past continuous action used in overlapping actions, as a story background, to show some habits and to emphasis of length of action. For example "I was walking to the station when I met Marry" "The birds were singing and the sun was shining". Sentence structure used for this tenses are
subject+ was/were+ first form of verb+ing. "She is writing a letter" negative sentence structure
subject+ was/were+Not+ first form of verb+ing "She is not writing a letter "Interrogative sentence structure
Was/were+Subject+verb+ing. "was she writing a letter?"
