A chancre is a commonly formed painless genital ulcer, resulting from syphilis. Formed approximately 21 days after the initial exposure to Treponema pallidum (the gram-negative spirochete bacterium yielding syphilis), it symbolizes the primary stage of infection. These ulcers usually form on or around the mouth, penis, vagina or the anus.
