Platelets Notes:
Platelets, also called thrombocytes and they are a component of blood that function along with the coagulation factors as blood clotting factors. They react to bleeding from blood vessel injury by clumping, thereby initiating a blood clot. Platelets have no cell nucleus: they are fragments of cytoplasm that are derived from the megakaryocytes. Platelets are pinched-off cytoplasmic fragments of specialized bone marrow cells. They are about 2-3 µm in diameter and have no nuclei. Platelets serve both structural and molecular functions in blood clotting.
