Chemotaxis Definitions:

  1. Movement of cells toward chemical attractants or away from chemical repellents is called chemotaxis.

Prescott's Microbiology 9th Edition by Joanne Willey, Linda Sherwood, Christopher J. Woolverton

  2. Tendency of organisms to move in response to a chemical gradient (toward an attractant or to avoid adverse stimuli).

Foundations in Microbiology by Kathleen Park Talaro, Arthur Talaro

Chemotaxis Notes:

The movement of an organism, in response to a chemical stimulus is known as Chemotaxis. The movement of bacteria, somatic cells and other unicellular or multi cellular organisms is directed by certain chemicals in their environment. In bacteria, this process is crucial to find food, by swimming towards the highest concentration of food particles. Whereas in multicellular organisms, chemotaxis is critical to early development, like the movement of sperms towards the egg during fertilization, as well as in the later stages of development, normal function and health.
