Butanediol Fermentation Definition:
A type of fermentation most often found in the family Enterobacteriaceae in which 2,3-butanediol is a major product; acetoin is an intermediate in the pathway and may be detected by the Voges-Proskauer test.

Butanediol Fermentation Notes:
Butanediol fermentation or 2,3-Butanediol fermentation is anaerobic fermentation of glucose with 2,3-butanediol as the end product. The overall reaction is: 2 pyruvate + NADH --> 2CO + 2,3-butanediol. This type of fermentation is common among facultative anaerobes Enterobacter and Klebsiella.
